This album is something of a mystery. Musicians are credited (first names only -- Owen was apparently responsible for bass, keyboards and horns, while Gabby and Errol played drums, and Dennis played guitar), but no band name is given; nor is there a first volume of African Rubber Dub to be found anywhere. There is no mention of On-U Sound, and yet On-U producer and label head Adrian Sherwood share credit for the production, and his fingerprints are all over the album's sound. No vocalist is credited, yet Bim Sherman's distinctively wispy croon floats in and out of the mix throughout the album; the program includes versions of such signature Sherman tunes as "Nightmare" and "Gold and Silver." On "Love Forever" you can hear the distinctive backing vocals and bluesy guitar of Skip McDonald, but he gets no mention either. What this all probably adds up to is a Bim Sherman dub collection, and regardless of its provenance it's a very good one. Sherwood's voice is always heard to best advantage in brief doses like this, and the spare, bass-heavy dub mixes are superb. This one won't be easy to find, but those who do can count themselves lucky.
