Orig Year 1997

In keeping with Jet Star's excellent Reggae Max series, this set rounds up a bumper crop of Luciano's early hits and crucial cuts. As this is a budget compilation, the album is severely lacking in information, but does at least list the producers. Inevitably, virtually the entire set is drawn from producer Philip "Fatis" Burrell's flood of music, with only "Time Is the Master," cut for Blacka Dread, and "Shake It Up Tonight," a huge hit overseen by Freddie McGregor and Dalton Browne, offering hints at what Luciano was doing outside the Xterminator studios. Almost half the set, nine tracks in all, is drawn from Luciano's One Way Ticket album. But that doesn't mean you can forego buying that record, such a masterpiece itself, and the other six songs here are equally crucial. A few numbers are culled from other early albums, and Reggae Max also picks up such crucial singles as "Wicked Haffe Run Way" and "Psalm 24," the latter pairing the singer with Mutabaruka. The latest number is "In This Together," another combo single featuring Louie Culture and Terror Fabulous, which was scooped up for Luciano's Where There Is Life album. There's little here that most fans won't already have; the set is cheap enough to pick up for the handful of songs not on the singer's studio albums. As an introduction to the artist, this is a real winner, filled with superb songs that will hopefully prompt buyers to purchase all Luciano's early albums. They could then dispense with this set, but the investment would have been well worth it

No Gabbon - means...????

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today I have been mostly enjoying Beres Hammond and Luciano - No Gabbon on Xterminator label

But what has been troubling me and despite a careful listen to the lyrics (which is about what they would do if they had the power to change society) and a quick google, I still can't work out what is a Gabbon and why Beres and Luci don't want it.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Re: No Gabbon - means...????

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it an analogy for venomous snakes? There is a Gabbon Viper. Would that make sense?

I wonder if the Gabbon Viper originates in Gabon and perhaps it's just a mis-spelling?

Orig Year 2008

Like many successful reggae singers, Luciano has something of an overexposure problem -- hardly a year has gone by since the mid-'90s without at least three Luciano albums (some of them, granted, probably unauthorized). But unlike many overexposed reggae singers, Luciano can actually stand up to that kind of exposure. His voice is so sweet and his songs so generally well written that it's hard to really imagine getting tired of him, and his huge popularity ensures that top-notch producers regularly offer him their finest rhythms. Jah Is My Navigator finds him in top form, singing his usual roots-and-culture songs over a host of old-school rhythms provided by legendary saxophonist and producer Dean Fraser. The first part of this album is the strongest: "For I" evokes the cathartic style of the late Lucky Dube, "I'm the Tuffest" updates the Johnny Clarke classic to nice effect, and "Trod Out" updates the vintage "Unchained" rhythm to even nicer effect. The album's high point is its middle section, which features the brilliant "Sweet Jamaica," an anguished song with a dark and dubby rhythm, and a very good cover of Bob Marley's "Jah Live." The program ends badly, though, with a non-reggae tearjerker called "Paradise Last," and a tedious two-chord exercise titled "Wise Up Youth." Jah Is My Navigator may not be his greatest album ever, but it's a worthy addition to this brilliant artist's catalog. ~ Rick Anderson

Just two months after the release of his excellent REVELATION TIME, Roots veteran Luciano brings together 13 tracks of older vibes on his second solid album of 2007, GOD IS GREATER THAN MAN. Compiled by producer Donville Davis, GOD IS GREATER THAN MAN is mostly a collection album with a few scattered new songs, and features Luciano lending his vibrant timbre to classic riddims from Kingston mainstays such as Duke Reid and Bunny Lee.

A NEW DAY was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.

It's rare to find a reggae singer these days who is able to draw audiences equally from the dancehall and roots crowds, but that's exactly what Luciano does, attracting fans of modern reggae with the up-to-the-minute grooves provided by his great Firehouse Crew band (and, on his latest album, the legendary drum'n'bass duo of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare) while simultaneously keeping the loyalty of the roots-and-culture crowd with the heartfelt spirituality of his lyrics. On A New Day, he opens with a long, hypnotic exercise in nyabinghi hymnody, the gently stirring repatriation anthem "No Night in Zion," then proceeds to deliver 16 more songs of spiritual uplift, all of them powered by soft-textured but deep and weighty roots rhythms. Particular highlights include the plaintive "Is There a Place?" and the soulful, horn-driven "Only a Fool." Even the spare and dubwise "Hardcore," which at first sounds like just another dancehall boast, turns out to be a declaration of religious faithfulness. Very impressive. ~
