1989's SERIOUS BUSINESS is a fairly typical late-era Third World album, in that the production has a number of extremely pop touches, including a lot of MIDI synths and sequencers rattling amidst the traditional guitars, bass, and percussion. On the other hand, with this album, the band seems to be pulling back somewhat from the crossover attempts of albums like 1983's ALL THE WAY STRONG.
There's still a pop/R&B cover--this time it's a slowed-down take on the Four Tops' "It's the Same Old Song"--and the arrangements are still closer to UB40's LABOUR OF LOVE than Bob Marley's BURNIN', but the group seems to be reaching back into their rootsier past here. For example, after the stirring "Reggae Ambassadors"--which the band liked so much they named their 20th anniversary anthology after it--there's a funky dub version called "D.J. Ambassador." Good stuff.

The soundtrack of a 1980 concert filmed at the legendary Rainbow in London, PRISONER IN THE STREET is one of the best live reggae albums of its era. At this point in their career, Third World had moved from their early roots style to a more pop-influenced R&B-reggae hybrid.
While the songs on PRISONER IN THE STREET aren't as light and poppy as they would be on later albums such as 1983's ALL THE WAY STRONG, the sound is still closer to the British pop-reggae of Aswad or UB40 than early Jamaican roots reggae. This isn't a bad thing, as Third World largely pioneered this style and do it better than just about anyone. A set list drawing heavily from 1977's 96 DEGREES IN THE SHADE and 1978's JOURNEY TO ADDIS means that PRISONER IN THE STREET features the group at their artistic height. This well-recorded concert is classic live reggae.

1983's ALL THE WAY STRONG is probably Third World's most pop-oriented album. In the early '80s, after Bob Marley's untimely death, reggae came somewhat adrift as bands explored new arenas in an attempt to pick up Marley's mantle as the public face of the music. (As it turned out, none of them were entirely successful before the advent of electronic dancehall reggae in the mid-'80s changed the music forever.)
Even more than their compadres Black Uhuru, Third World made the decision to emphasize the pop elements of their music, adding synths and electronic drums to their bass-heavy arrangements, and featuring a new emphasis on R&B-style love songs over Rasta sloganeering. The single "Love Is Out to Get You" is representative of the album as a whole; unfortunately, neither it nor the album had much crossover success at the time.

A fairly rare item in the Third World discography--it was originally released only in Jamaica in 1978, not showing up in the US and UK until some time after--JOURNEY TO ADDIS is one of Third World's best albums. It's also one of their more rootsy and serious affairs, with a more pronounced Rasta vibe than many of their poppier LPs.
There are still the usual Third World R&B influences, as on the opening "One Cold Boogie," "Cold Sweat"--not the James Brown tune--and the almost discoish "Now That We've Found Love" (think of Philadelphia International's Gamble and Huff productions remixed by Lee "Scratch" Perry). But, from the aptly titled "Cool Meditation" to the fiery title track, the emphasis is more on serious declarations of religious and social pride. JOURNEY TO ADDIS is a thoughtful but never over-serious roots reggae gem.
