When Island Records released the double-LP soundtrack to Countryman in the spring of 1982, ten years after the appearance of The Harder They Come, it was easy to see that company founder Chris Blackwell was looking to do for the current state of reggae what he had done before, i.e., promote it via a various-artists sampler that happened to have a cinematic tie-in. In this case, the movie itself was nowhere to be found, not even at the college campus midnight showings that had given birth to the cult following for The Harder They Come; director Dickie Jobson's Jamaican adventure film, about a runaway couple, corrupt officials, and a fisherman endowed with magical powers didn't see release until 1983, and then had little distribution. Of course, reggae was no longer a budding new sound in the early '80s, its standard-bearer, Bob Marley, having succumbed to cancer in 1981. Bob Marley & the Wailers got the most tracks on the album, eight out of 22, some in remixed or alternate versions, and Wally Badarou had five tracks for his instrumental score for the film, some of them overlaid with dialogue. The rest was a who's who of the Island roster, including Steel Pulse, Dennis Brown, and Toots & the Maytals, making for an excellent reggae collection that held together well, even if it couldn't have the impact of The Harder They Come ten years before. (Island released a single-CD remastering of Countryman on June 26, 2001.) ~ William Ruhlmann

Digitally remastered by Gary Moore & Gavin Lurssen.

Additional Info Soundtrack

Music is integral to this seminal Jamaican film, as it follows the exploits of drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, who plays himself, and featuring a myriad of other denizens of the music industry in lead roles and bit parts. The movie itself was awash in music, which pours out of clubs, studios, record shops, and radios. The soundtrack features only some of the songs included in the film, but what a collection of cuts it is. Bunny Wailer's anthemic title track, Inner Circle's infectious "We a Rockers," Jacob Miller's masterpiece "Tenement Yard," Peter Tosh's threatening "Stepping Razor," Junior Byles' equally forceful "Fade Away" -- classic songs one and all. Gorgeous harmonies are delivered up by the Maytones, Justin Hines & the Dominoes, and the Heptones on some of their greatest songs. Jamaica's smoothest singer, Gregory Isaacs, performs a sublime "Slavemaster," Junior Murvin's sweet tones simmer across "Police and Thieves," and Kiddus I delivers up an extraordinary cultural toast. One of the most arresting scenes in the film belonged to Burning Spear's Winston Rodney, performing a powerful a cappella "Jah No Dead." It is just as potent on record, and segues exquisitely into Third World's loving cover of "Satta Amasagana." From rockers to grounations, Rockers had it all, and the soundtrack remains one of the most diverse yet coherent albums of the roots age. ~ Jo-Ann Greene

The soundtrack to the seminal 1980 film Rockers features 14 classic reggae and dub tracks from Bunny Wailer, Inner Circle, Junior Murvin, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, The Maytones, The Heptones, Jacob Miller, Junior Byles, Gregory Isaacs, Kiddus, Justin and the Dominoes, and The Upsetters. Palm label. Remastered. 2003.

Rockers soundtrack lyrics -- Book Of Rules .. The Heptones

Isn't it strange how princesses and kings
In clown-ragged capers in sawdust rings
While common people like you and me
We'll be builders for eternity
Each is given a bag of tools
A shapeless mass and the book of rules

Each must make his life as flowing in
Tumbling block on a stepping stone
While common people like you and me
We'll be builders for eternity
Each is given a bag of tools
A shapeless mass and the book of rules

Look when the rain has fallen from the sky
You know the sun will be only with us for a while
While common people like you and me
We'll be builders for eternity
Each is given a bag of tools
A shapeless mass and the book of rules

The soundtrack of a 1980 concert filmed at the legendary Rainbow in London, PRISONER IN THE STREET is one of the best live reggae albums of its era. At this point in their career, Third World had moved from their early roots style to a more pop-influenced R&B-reggae hybrid.

While the songs on PRISONER IN THE STREET aren't as light and poppy as they would be on later albums such as 1983's ALL THE WAY STRONG, the sound is still closer to the British pop-reggae of Aswad or UB40 than early Jamaican roots reggae. This isn't a bad thing, as Third World largely pioneered this style and do it better than just about anyone. A set list drawing heavily from 1977's 96 DEGREES IN THE SHADE and 1978's JOURNEY TO ADDIS means that PRISONER IN THE STREET features the group at their artistic height. This well-recorded concert is classic live reggae.
