Continuing the line of kid-friendly music from around the world, Putumayo Kids Presents: Reggae Playground takes up the standard and runs through a series of reggae works from a tour manager's nightmare of locations. Starting and ending in the Caribbean, the album makes stops in Europe, Africa, the Indian Ocean, the Americas, and the South Pacific. Pedigrees are excellent on Playground, with connections to Bob Marley tossed in here and there. The music is all upbeat (even the surprisingly sad "Le Vieil Elephant" has a happy tone if one doesn't know the French). There have been other compilations of reggae from around the world (including Putumayo's own Reggae Around the World), but this one is an excellent showcase of both directions of influence. On some tracks, the artist clearly is essentially a non-Jamaican performing straightforward Jamaican reggae. On others, the artist fuses aesthetics of the form with their own forms and ideals, and on still other tracks Jamaicans take up American and British pop (the Burning Souls take up the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun" ably, and Toots & the Maytals provide an excellent cover of "Take Me Home Country Roads," hearkening back all the way to Yellowman in the process). An outstanding album for children by any measure, and moreover an entirely enjoyable album for adults, with relatively little "dumbing down" of the music as far as children's albums go, and some excellent performances all around. ~ Adam Greenberg

Performers include: Toots & The Maytals, Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt

Since its rise to global popularity in the 1970s, reggae has remained a defining influence on international music. This Putumayo sampler, entitled REGGAE AROUND THE WORLD, charts the effect of that influence, and the way it appears, either undiluted or in hybridized form, in music from Africa, Australia, South America, and the U.S. The inclusion of pureblood reggae artists like Burning Spear keeps the original torch burning, but the real treat is in hearing how reggae is incorporated into songs from Nigeria, Ghana, Brazil, and elsewhere. Like most Putumayo releases, REGGAE AROUND THE WORLD is bright, groove-centric, and eminently listenable.

Reggae's infectious and adaptable one-drop shuffle rhythm, coupled with the music's tendency to deal with social and political issues, has made it a popular genre for musicians worldwide, and when combined with pop and hip-hop elements, has made for some fascinating hybrids. This Putumayo collection reflects both the diversity and the unified cohesiveness of these reggae-based forms, and makes a fascinating introduction to reggae in the 21st century. The disc opens with the bright-sounding "Pas de Problemes" by the French group Kana, which features some solid and efficient Jamaican-inspired horn work. Nigeria's Majek Fashek drops bits of highlife into the reggae stew with the Bob Marley-like "African Unity," while the French group Gnawa Diffusion fuses rap, rai, reggae, jazz, and funk into a patchwork quilt version of "Ya Laymi." The Welsh/Spanish conglomeration known as Mas y Mas adds a dose of Celtic fiddles to the mix on "Agua." French Guiana's Chris Combette (who sings "it's a rastaphobe world" in his selection, "Babylone Buildings") draws on East Indian elements, including an impressive sitar break, played here by Mungel Patasar. Perhaps the biggest name on this compilation, the Ivory Coast's Alpha Blondy, sings "Lalogo" in the Bambara language, a track that was recorded at the legendary Tuff Gong studio in Jamaica. As a sampler of the ever evolving international reggae community, World Reggae opens a wide window into some fascinating new music. ~ Steve Leggett

French singer Kana "Pas de Problemes", Nigerian Majek Fashek "African Unity", Anglo-Hispanic Band Mas y Mas "Agua", etc.
