Famous for its silk as voice (hence Garnett Silk) Garnett was an Overnight Sensation in the early 1990s Jamaican Dancehall scene

He started in the mid-1980s deejaying on various sound systems and even the registration of single track by the acronym "Little Bimbo" In the first part of the 90th century, his locks had grown out and he went from Deejay for the singer to change its name to Garnett Silk

born Garnett Silk Daymon Smith (2 April 1966) in Brumalia district of Mandeville Jamaica He was taken under the wing Rasta DJ Tony Rebel and introduced to Sugar Minott's Youthman Promotion sound system that had a hand in recruiting many young acts who later became international stars

Together with Rebel Silk reinstate Rastafarianism into adancehall scene by 1992 had become almost overwrought with X-rated and violent texts then burst on the scene recording many hit songs and albums with "Nothing can separate us" "It's Growing" and "100% Silk"

Tragically a fire at his mother's house on 9 December 1994 killed two Garnett and his mother (with Garnett first escape since giving up his life trying to save his mother), the Jamaican reggae scene was shocked by his death, and it is a testament to his talent and his amazing voice to his music still sells all over the world today, perhaps stronger now than it did before his untimely death

This set's title is a bit misleading, especially if you presume that it's filled with rich romantic numbers; and although this ten-track compilation showcases many of Garnett Silk's moods, few could be described as silky. Released in 1996, amongst the flood of posthumous albums being unleashed in the aftermath of the singer's tragic death, this set is a decidedly mixed bag, emotionally and musically.

Six of the songs come courtesy of King Jammy, another pair were cut for E.J. Robinson, and there's one each from Top Ranks and Right Track. Point of entry for most fans will be the big hits "Fill Us Up with Your Mercy" and "Lord Watch Over Our Shoulder," both excellent cultural cuts for Jammy, while the equally stellar "Let Them Talk" unites the singer with Frankie Paul and Determine in praise of Jah. "Babylon Be Still" was also a much deserved hit, and producer Robinson used a variation of its rhythm for the angry "Cry of My People," where Silk tackles injustice.

In a very different mood comes "Let It Flow," Silk is at his sweetest, sharing the delight of love with listeners for an absolutely irresistible number. "So Divine" is Motownesque, a wondrously pop-soul love song twinned to Jammy's own true love of dancehall beats and plenty of sparkling melody. In contrast, the more sophisticated "Your Gonna Need Love" takes a lusher, more modern approach, while "Stacy" again finds inspiration from the '60s, but this time in a pure soul fashion, Silk at his most impassioned.

Careening from romance to religion, and across a myriad of styles, Silky Mood is a roller coaster ride, and although there are more representative comps to be had, this is still one that fans will treasure.

In 1989, producer and veteran vocalist Derrick Morgan took DJs Tony Rebel and Little Bimbo into the studio and recorded a split album. He changed the course of Jamaican music when he convinced the latter artist to have a go at singing a few numbers. The following year, Bimbo inked a contract with Steely & Clevie and they gave him a new name, Garnett Silk, but not the album they promised. That sat on the shelf, and, disgusted, the newly christened artist withdrew from the music scene. Of course, Silk returned with a vengeance, garnering his first hit in 1992 under the aegis of Bobby Digital. It wasn't until 1994 that Steely & Clevie finally got around to releasing the set they'd been sitting on, and when it appeared, Love Is the Answer soared up the chart. The fabulous devotional title track was a huge hit, one of Silk's best, and was followed by "Fight Back," which the pair did not produce but appears here in an even more ferocious remix that they did oversee. That number paired Silk with Richie Stephens to phenomenal effect across an adamant, soulful refusal to give in to life's travails. The lovelorn "Used to Be My Girl" brings the singer together with DJ Supervisor, with both men lamenting the loss of their girls. Less successful is "Friends and Lover" that unites Silk with Sharon Forrester. But that is just the beginning of some of the set's difficulties. In those early days, the singer was still in need of guidance, but instead he got producers whose attention was obviously elsewhere, at least part of the time. Left to his own devices, Silk experimented with a variety of vocal styles, from emotive soul, R&B, dancehall, and even lighter pop-soul. His musical excursions are thrilling; the backing, however, at times goes straight off the boil. "A Man in Love," for instance, features a fabulously emotive vocal, but the stark rhythm -- a blizzard of beats and a repetitive keyboard riff -- does little to showcase Silk's talents. "All the Woman I Need" doesn't even sound finished and cries out for more of Steely's superb Studio One-flavored keyboards. A dancehall number like "Put on the Pressure" is a real shock attack, its lyrics now fatally dated, but so strong is Silk's performance and the producer's rhythm, you can forgive that flaw, while "Get Up Shock Out" is nearly as strong. But the album's acknowledged masterpiece is the ferocious cover of Horace Andy's "Skylarking," which itself alone is worth the price of admission. In 1990, this album would have been a revelation, even though the producers' eyes weren't always on the ball. Four years later, it's still a great set with enough classics to equal the artist's latest work. ~ Jo-Ann Greene

Myers, Paul "Wrong Move" Crossdale (keyboards); Brian Gold (background vocals).Recording information: Digital B Recording Studio 6, Kingston, Jamaica.Arranger: Bobby "Digital" Dixon.During his tragically short career, Garnett Silk cut a slew of songs for a variety of producers, unleashing a flood of hits before his death in 1994. Arguably, though, his best work was done with Bobby "Digital" Dixon, the man who released his debut album It's Growing. Give I Strength compiles another 16 phenomenal numbers recorded for the producer. Although the set is split between cultural and romantic numbers, the former are so powerful they tend to totally overshadow the latter. The devotional songs are all masterpieces -- "Kingly Character" and "Splashing Dashing" are both glorious, infectious celebrations of God's greatness; "Give I Strength" is a fervent, anthemic prayer, while "Silk Chant" is an inspired, and inspiring, sermon, taken directly from Psalm 68.The equally superb "Every Knee Shall Bow," on the Stalag rhythm, unites the singer with Charlie Chaplin and Cocoa Tea to exalt Jah and give thanks. "Rejoice in His Name" takes to task a friend who no longer does, for, as Silk explains on the high stepping, jazzy "The Rod," "music is the rod and we are Moses," and the singer is determined to lead fans to the Promised Land. But even the righteous face road bumps along the way, and on "Judge Not," Silk reasons with those quick to judge him and others, a theme revisited on "Don't Test," where the harassed singer turns on those making his life a misery."Character," "Splashing," "Knee," and "Rod" were all big hits, but the others were of no lesser quality. The powerful "I Am Not for Sale" was also a chart buster, wherein Silk fends off a rich temptress. The rest of the set revolves around matters of the heart -- love songs, wooing numbers, heartache, heartfelt romances, and, in the case of "Like a Mother to Me," an exquisite paean to the perfect woman.Digital, who also arranged the numbers, created phenomenal backings that enrich the moods and atmospheres Silk conjures up, all expertly laid down by the likes of Danny Browne, Winston "Bo Peep" Bowen, Dean Fraser, with Brian & Tony Gold among those providing the exquisite harmonies. Even with all the music Silk cut, there's little he recorded that doesn't resonate on some level. This set, however, contains much of his strongest work; it's a true collection of classics
