Release Date: June 17, 2008

The Reggae Gold series has really turned things around after stalling for some time around the turn of the century, and the 2008 edition continues the string of excellence. Enur's crossover hit "Calabria 2007," featured on a national Target commercial, is a striking early track that exudes an energy that's hard to resist, although its gimmicky nature ensures that it has a palpable "shelf life." Every Reggae Gold volume seems to introduce a hot new talent who makes a big impression, and in this case, it's Sernai, a singer who flexes his versatility with two tracks: the hip-hop-flavored "Doh," which scores with hard-hitting beats and a chorus that'll have you yelling like Homer Simpson, and the soulful dancehall love song "She Loves Me," catchy enough to bring back memories of past crossover hits like Wayne Wonder's "No Letting Go" and Kevin Lyttle's "Turn Me On" (despite lyrics like "Baby girl, I wanna get you undressed. / I know you like it when I give you rough sex. / Bend over, let me hold you from the neck. / Piss me off and let me get upset."). The first 10 tracks on the album have a distinctly aggressive hip-hop and dancehall edge -- except for the major exception of Bermudan DJ Collie Buddz's roots-flavored "Blind to You," a stunningly bold track that has to go down as one of the best and most infectious in recent years. The roots and lovers tunes are packed onto the end, with Jamelody's "Pressure," Fantan Mojah's "Stronger" and especially Melanie Hall's wonderful F.U. tune "Somebody Come Get Me" ("Somebody come get me before I kill this man.") helping to round out the album in fine style, even if there are a few underperforming tunes in the latter half.
