Prince Malachi, born Mark Wynter, began playing drums from the age of seven, and by eleven was playing performing shows with his father, an R&B, Jazz and Latin guitarist. He then formed a group called Avalanche before adopting the stagename of Federal and beginning a new career as a deejay, chatting on leading UK Sound Systems such as Gemini, Fatman, Sir Coxsone and Java throughout the mid-to-late eighties. The death of fellow deejay General DC inspired him to turn his life around and join the ranks of today's cultural messengers. In the second half of 1997 Prince Malachi teamed up with Xterminator producer Phillip "Fatis" Burrell with whom he recorded the critical acclaimed "Love Jah", released on 7" single at the beginning of 1998. Two further singles followed on the 'Xterminator' label and with both getting extensive airplay in Europe, the US and Jamaica Prince Malachi's alliance with "Fatis" turned out to be very successful.
His debut album "Jah Light" is self-produced effort recorded at various UK studio including A Class Studio and Mafia & Fluxy Studio and mixed at Mark Angelo's studio. Prince Malachi was actually busy putting the finishing touches to this album as he and "Fatis" Burrell met in a London studio. "Jah Light" is a fine roots oriented album which showcases a singer/songwriter whose warm soulful tenor and range of cultural lyrics have not only invited favourable comparisons with Luciano, but inspired endless superlatives since the release of his "Love Jah" single. Expertly backed by musicians like Noel Grant, Steven Kelly, Kari Bannerman, Roy Day, Winston "Sax" Rose and Kush Zebediah Gebesis Prince Malachi deliveres a solid and enjoyable album. Standout tracks include "Step By Step", "Deliver Us", "Johnny" and "Chronic" on which he partly returns to his deejay days. The tracks are interspersed with atmospheric readings from the Bible in Amharic from one Abeselem Debebe Beyene across Prince Malachi's binghi drumming. A very promising set from an exceptional roots singer who is ready to take his place at the forefront of modern reggae music.
