Ever since he burst on the reggae scene back in the early eighties with Trouble Me A Trouble Yuh and World A Music and the classic Showcase album Ini Kamoze has forged his own trail through reggae music as a complete original. Never one to flood the market with releases, his singles are always eagerly anticipated and he rarely if ever misses the mark. His profile was given a boost a couple of years ago when Damien Marley sampled his voice and used the riddim to World A Music for his international smash Welcome To Jamrock. Kamoze himself issued the excellent My Girl, included here alongside next singles R.A.W. featuring Sizzla and the binghi chant Rasta Nation Now, and now he’s delivered this excellent album. On a first listen, apart from the aforementioned singles, tracks such as Isgonbehot, Jailhouse, Control, on a new cut to the old Gatherer’s Lee Perry classic Words Of My Mouth riddim, Battlefront Warrior, a worthwhile cover of his old Xterminator side Hardware and Out Of Jamaica, all sound like classic Kamoze. Recorded at Harmony House and mixed at Big Yard by Shane Brown, 51 50 Rule is a treat for fans and should be investigated by anyone who can appreciate an original talent whose way with words remains unique. Recommended.
